Study design explained in plain language
Study design is the set of choices a researcher makes about who is compared with whom, who knows what, and what gets measured. Design determines what a result can mean, which is why two studies reporting the same number can carry very different weight.

What is a control group and why does it decide everything?
A control group is a comparison group that does not receive the thing being studied. Without one, there is nothing to hold the result against, because people change over weeks for many ordinary reasons.
A study with no control group can describe change. It cannot attribute that change to the session.
What does randomization actually do?
Randomization assigns each participant to a group by chance rather than by choice. It spreads unknown differences between people evenly across groups.
Without it, the two groups can differ from the start, and any difference at the end may simply reflect who ended up where.
What is blinding, and why is it hard here?
Blinding means the participant, or the person measuring, does not know which group someone is in. It stops expectation from shaping both the experience and the recording of it.
In this category blinding is difficult because sessions involve a person, a room, and attention. A convincing sham condition is a real design problem rather than a detail.
What does placebo mean in this context?
Placebo refers to change that follows from expectation and context rather than from the specific procedure. It is a real, measurable effect and not imagination.
Because a quiet room and focused attention are part of any session, placebo is not a nuisance here. It is a plausible explanation that a study has to rule out.
What is effect size and why does it matter more than a p value?
Effect size describes how large a difference is. A statistical test can flag a difference as unlikely to be chance while that difference remains too small to notice in your life.
So the useful question is not whether a study found a difference. It is how big the difference was and whether a person would feel it.

Why is replication the test that matters most?
Replication means a different team runs the study again and gets a similar result. A single finding, however clean, is one result from one setting.
